Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis

The Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis is a summer insisitute at the University of Essex (UK) which offers training in a variety of methods of social science research design, data collection, and analysis. A few courses in survey research are typically offered each year, and many of courses teach methods of analysis that can be useful in analyzing survey research data.

Poynter Institute On-Line Courses

“Understanding and Interpereting Polls” is an on-line course by the Poynter Institute and can be useful to anyone interested in understanding and interpereting survey data. The course is targeted toward journalists, but is free and available to anyone (registration required).

The Joint Program in Survey Methods (JPSM) offers a series of one and two day short-courses covering many aspects of survey design and analysis. Courses are generally taught by leading experts in survey methodology. Most courses are offered in the greater Washington DC area.

Experts offer Multiple Takes on Technology at Conference

Thomas Guterbock summed things up nicely at the recent “New Technolgies and Survey Research” conference held by the Program on Survey Research at Harvard University.

In his presentation “Strategies and Standards for Reaching Respondents in a New Age of Technology,” Guterbock – the Director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Survey Research – described both sides of the new technology coin: it’s easier than ever for pollsters and survey researchers to get in touch with people – via cellphone, email, instant message, etc.; at the same time, other technologies are making it easier for those same people to avoid surveys—by using caller id, answering machines, etc.
